How to Choose the Best Motor Oil for Your RV

The motor oil you use in your RV has been compared to the oxygen running through your bloodstream. The oil keeps your vehicle running smoothly and protects it from rust and corrosion. Basically, you need it to keep the engine running properly. Without oil, your engine will die the same as your body will die without oxygen.

There is more to it. You need the right motor oil for your particular vehicle. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to maintaining the proper levels of fluid. It depends on many factors, like your type of engine and the climate where you will be driving.

What Does Engine Oil Do for Your RV?

According to Classic Vans you need the proper engine oil for the following reasons:

  • To clean the engine. A good quality engine oil will contain a detergent that keeps dirt particles from building up in the engine.
  • To cool the parts of your engine. Oil flows through the parts of your engine and keeps them lubricated which prevents them from overheating.
  • For efficient performance. When your engine runs smoothly due to proper lubrication, your RV will run more efficiently and use less fuel.
  • Lubrication. When the engine’s moving parts rub against each other, it creates friction. The oil prevents this friction by keeping the engine’s moving parts lubricated. This also lessens wear and tear on the engine.
  • Oxidation prevention. Changes in temperature create oxidation on some engine parts. Proper lubrication prevents this.
  • As a sealant. The correct engine oil will act as a sealant on the piston rings. This helps maintain compression, which is needed for the engine parts to move smoothly.

Synthetic or Conventional Oil?

Using synthetic oil in your RV has many advantages over conventional oil:

  • It allows the RV engine to run cooler.
  • Reduces the likelihood of oxidation.
  • Your engine will start faster in cooler weather.
  • Will improve engine performance when you tow another vehicle like a car or a boat.

No matter what motor oil you use, and no matter how many miles you put on the odometer, you should change the oil at least once a year.

Another tip is to check your owner’s manual and follow the instructions there for choosing the right motor oil for your RV.
